Essential HVAC Safety Reminders
Safety Reminders
Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids or other combustible materials in the vicinity of your furnace, boiler, or any other appliance.
Keep any and all combustible materials away from the furnace and/or boiler. The area around the furnace and/or boiler must be kept clear of any and all combustible materials (i.e., gasoline, paint or paint products, newspapers, paper products, boxes, etc.).
Make sure to keep the supply and return vents accessible. Do not block them with furniture.
It has been recommended not to use a furnace that has been under water until it is checked by a qualified service agency. A flood-damaged furnace can be extremely dangerous and should be inspected. It is further recommended that any and all parts that have been under water or wet be replaced (i.e., gas controls, control system parts, and electrical parts).
Product manufacturers recommend that the equipment be maintained annually by a qualified service provider. Annual service for a furnace, boiler, air conditioner, or heat pump is like an oil change is to a car—preventative maintenance.
Keep any and all bushes cut back to allow proper clearance around the condenser (outside portion of the air conditioner).
Keep vine plants from growing into the condensers (outside portion of the air conditioner)
Do not allow dogs to urinate on the condensers, as it will cause the coils to deteriorate.
Product manufacturers recommend the equipment be maintained annually by our experts.
Prior to installing bushes, fencing, or decking around the air conditioner condenser(s), remember you not only need to allow for proper clearances as per the manufacturer but also allow for servicing of the unit(s).
Dogs and Air Conditioners
Can allowing dogs to urinate on my condenser or heat pump coil cause damage? Yes, dog urine can ruin an air conditioning (AC) or heat pump unit. Dog urine is acidic and can corrode the metal components of the AC or Heat Pump unit, particularly the aluminum fins and copper coils. This corrosion can lead to:
- Damage the efficiency of the unit. ✓ It can cause leaks in the refrigerant lines.
- It can restrict the airflow through the unit which thereby reduces its efficiency.
- Corrosion is so extensive that the damaged air conditioner or heat pump would require unit replacement.
What can I do should a dog urinate on the air conditioner or heat pump?
- Rinse area thoroughly with water.
Recommendations:
- Put up a garden or animal barrier type fence around the condenser a minimum of one foot away to help keep the dog(s) away from the condenser.
- Train the dog to stay away from the condenser/heat pump area.
Squirrel & Bird Caution
It is important to keep bird or squirrel feeders away from air conditioning condensers or heat pumps. Bird or squirrel food and debris that are left to build up in the condenser or heat pump will restrict proper airflow for the condenser or heat pump unit and could cause premature failure of the fan blade or motor.
